A new series I'm making starting in this Midsomars Litha in 2023 'Duck Life'. A series of highlighting the different aspects and interaction of my daily to dos and care in rearing my pet ducks which often crosses over with my chookie Wookie (Hens and a Rooster) keeping. In this post I vlogged the daily morning duck bath they have after I remove them from their sleeping duck crib in the office. Enriching the Warm Bath...I keep the third full bathtub water from their bath the night before which contains dried catnip and common mint powder, believe it or not the herbs don't just treat and scent my ducks (they smell like crunchy cold sweetened cucumbers) it also bleaches out the enamel in the tub somehow. In the morning I pat them hello in their crib before going into the gardens to forage dandelions and greens for my chooks and dandelions for the ducks. After releasing the chickens from their red house into the run and give them their morning greens I then go back inside and scatter the dandelions in the bath which has been topped with warm water to the halfway mark (my Rouen girl 'Freya' does not like cold morning baths). After taking out each duck from their crib with neck ruffles and hugs I then put one at a time into the morning greens bath. Whilst they munch their greens and play for around the hour mark I actually go back out to clean the chicken run, nest boxes, the duck run and duck habitat which includes topping grower pellets for the ducks and changing over the waters. The water isn't wasted but put straight into the plants around the planted run barriers and pots. When its time to dry each one of with the towel on a bench covered with a hand-towel to be released to their habitat I then scoop up remainder greens from the tub to put in a water bowl to continue munching outside in their habitat. Ducks do not like wilted greens and the water holder greens keeps the greens fresh. In Goes Fawn...The sook with extra cheese out of the four is now around 50cm in length across his body at 7 months old. Rouens are allot larger than their predecessor mallard ducks and thus cannot fly like ducks in the wild do. Freya Joins...His sibling who is also Rouen cross Freja is the honker and the wimpering sook of the original trio I have, at 7 months old she just gets more vocal and puffier with age, not so much as bigger like the boys/her brothers. In she goes to join Fawn. Frigg to the Party...Frigg although he doesn't look it is a Peking cross Rouen and sibling to Freya and Fawn, now at 55cm in body length, he seems to be the overall watcher of the ducks and loves to stand or perch on my shoulder as I walk around if I let him. He has a sweet beautiful temperament but will occasionally like Fawn' try to push the boundaries or give me a playful nip/tug in which I pinch on his beak and show my dominance with a squishy hug or playful ruffle as one does with a dog, he is literally no different and even understands the word No' Fawn does too believe it or not. In Goes Sunna...Sunna is a pure Peking and my latest addition getting her at 3 months old, she was originally a crazy cakes but she was already learning to perch or stand on my hand in day 2 of getting her. She loves belly rubs and to crawl up my chest to snake her neck around mine in an embrace as she does a funny purr wimper... Sometimes I don't know who is more sook, her or Fawn. Left over Greens and Clean...The greens scooped out for the outside water bowl in the duck habitat. Believe it or not the tub is extra clean when I pull the plug and spray it down with the shower head. The sand and dirt from the greens roots etc actually cleans the tub/no need for cleaners or bleach. Thank-you for reading, Stay tuned for more...
