Meet my Ducks on youtube today and we celebrate Freyas 1st egg, Summers Bealtaine Aus 202212/10/2022 Introducing my feather baby ducks as they are present day. The two boys 'Frigg & Fawn are siblings to Freya' the nutmeg colored female. All three are a French Rouen cross Peking and are around 6 months in age now and will continue to grow and fill out until they reach the 1 year mark. The three siblings have been raised since 7 weeks of age and come inside my office every night to sleep after a splash in the bath tub for at least an hour after dinner. The fourth Duckie 'Sunna' is my latest addition and I got her around a month ago at 3 months old and she is pure Peking duck. She still has yellowing to develop on her beak along with size but after handling my other 3, I definitely notice a major difference in her keel/carriage and even tail positioning etc as is with her breed.... Please feel free to drop any comments questions re duckies :) My ducks have a bath after tea time every night and come in the house to sleep in the office next to my desk/computer. I do keep the water in the tub for the next morning so they can take a cold dip before I take them outside to the enclosure which gives me an hour (whilst they play in the tub) to garden, water and tend to my chickens and rooster etc. The ducks sleeping chest mucked out each morning and topped with fresh sawdust. As I go through loosening the sawdust I will find a clean egg buried in the sawdust each morning. She also started laying after I put a barrier of hardware cloth up in the sleeping box to separate the girls from boys. The boys are just to randy and try to mount them all night and early morning lol and I was worried about the girls getting some peace and rest especially when one of them ended with slight gash to the wing (Sunna) The boys can get carried away but now with the mesh up they can see each other and chatter which is important but the boys give the girls some respite. I also have found much less cleaning is needed since doing this. The girls are much more relaxed and rested also since. I do believe the world would be a better place if folk expanded their attitude of keeping family pets beyond the cat or doggo... But anyway congratulations Freya on your first egg and your big mama status of being a duck... I have never owned ducks nor chooks before and yes its been a journey with lots of things let go in order to look after them but I have enjoyed every moment of it despite being covered in feathers, sawdust and having all my forearms scratched up which also happens because I handle wild birds Ravens and Magpies also and now blackbirds... All my eggs are boiled and peeled so I can give the chickens the shell with cooked white which is good for them and the rest goes to my corvidaes (Ravens, Magpies and sometimes the Currawong 'Ghost' that frequents here) I'm vegan so I don't eat eggs however if food was tight I would eat the eggs only as source of calories, not nutriotion Anyway, thank-you for keeping up with me on my journey and there's more coming on the horizon, Stay tuned...
