Bugs and insects in a garden regardless of garden size is an indicator of overall life. Too much pests and not enough pest predators can be an imbalance. Baron grounds like my concrete paved courtyard in this previous property also mean lack of life (pots can only supply so much). Although the mantis eats both pests and non pests; they still benefit a garden and are great eco indicators. I had slowly I had been using the principles of permaculture to this old in the old address in order to promote life and a thriving/giving ecology, with complimentary systems, companion planting and ancestrally tied, druidic ways. When I transferred my rosemary bush to new ground however, there was a massive prey-mantis that fell out onto my hand. A relationship was rekindled with this agile, winged critter. I remember that as a child that I would always have a stick insect of sorts or a Mantis hanging on the mesh screen of my bedroom window saying hello in the spring and fall. I eventually started opening my screen and window so they could wonder in and play. Boxing their reflection in the mirror and wanting a piece of whatever I was eating seemed to be their favourite gig. So I thought I would put together this factoid sheet for those curious about our Mantis friends. These pictures are of another mantis I found in the courtyard garden, she's all day cameo in color and is double the size of Bell's. She was relocated to the pine trellis/plants for better camouflage.
