Although the mantis eats both pests and non pests; they still benefit a garden and are great eco indicators. I had slowly I had been using the principles of permaculture to this old in the old address in order to promote life and a thriving/giving ecology, with complimentary systems, companion planting and ancestrally tied, druidic ways. When I transferred my rosemary bush to new ground however, there was a massive prey-mantis that fell out onto my hand. Yes a jumped a mile in reaction and felt so guilty looking at the mantis flung to the floor. I picked her up gently with a twig (they can bite) and then placed her on my young Wisteria. I misted both her and the wisteria down with a sorry. She has been following me around the courtyard after that and we became fast friends. I had taken to naming her Bella/bells. Although they live only for a year, I call all her green winged family as 'Bells/Bella'. Since that first day if I don't get to the courtyard till late, Bells would actually crawl into and look into my bedroom door/window. Mantises are a good indicator of a healthy eco system in gear and are fun critters to have around.
